ORIGIN OF THAI MASSAGE The origin of Thai massage - background, principles, objectives and practices
- have left to the unintended much guessing, misinformation, myth and stories for many years since the Western world
took interest in this ancient art. Most of the written information available to the people outside Thailand has been written
by non-Thai persons and left room for much misunderstanding about this venerable tradition. In
1767, Burma invaded Thailand and destroyed innumerable Thai Holy Scriptures and various manuscripts. They set fire to Thai
temples to melt the gold on images of Buddha. Since then, information on Thai massage has been difficult to obtain. The only
available information on Thai massage is in the ancient Thai texts. Traditional Thai medicine is also found in the ancient
Thai texts and Buddhist Tripitaka (the Holy Scripture). The earliest clear historical evidence of the existence of Thai massage
dates to Ayutthaya era in a royal decree in 1455 appointing officials to the government department of massage.
